Ok, I just realized that 12.5 lbs doesn't account for the fact that the wheels/tires are supported by the floor, so it would be a bit less than that.
However, the weight of the top wheel/tire would be supported by the hook when the bike is hung up as well so the question is still pretty much valid.

Ok, so I live in an apartment with my girlfriend and we each have a cheap road bike and an expensive mountain bike (priorities!). We have no garage, so obviously these bikes are taking up a lot of floor space.
Ok, so now I've got the plans drawn and the materials bought for a four hook bike rack that would hang the bikes vertically by *gasp* one hook per bike!!!!! I actually made a similar rack in college and stored several bikes in or for a year or so without problem so I have a few questions:

1)How can hanging a bike on a rubberized hook bend a rim, when the very strength of a wheel comes from the spokes holding the hub in place through tension (a "pulling" force) rather than compression (a "pushing" force). I could maybe see if you're simply talking about the actual outer rim being dinged if the weight is unevenly applied or something like that, but beyond that...I don't get it.

2) For the bearing grease issue: When a bike is sitting on it's two tires, there is a certain amount of force on the bearings of the two wheels simply because of the weight of the bike pressing down on them.
Let's say that the bike weighs 25 lbs. Ok, so that's 12.5 lbs per wheel. Now let's say that a 200 lbs guy gets on the bike. Now we're up to 112.5 lbs per wheel. Do you really mean to tell me that the bearings are made to work with the 112.5 lbs of force on them, but are not able to support the measly 25 lbs of the bike without leaking their grease? I suppose the argument could be that it's because the 25 lbs is constant, but still that seems pretty minuscule next to 112 lbs.

Please note that I'm writing this simply because I don't understand what the problem could be and am seeking information. I don't pretend to know more about bikes or bike racks than you and apologize if this post seems like I'm saying that I'm right and your wrong. Cheers!

Is there anyone with a 2010 malibu who has found a trunk type rack they can use? Our malibu appears to have such a tight fit between top of the trunk and window frame that no hooks will fit into it without damaging the car.

Hey ljames,

Yes, if your Honda Civic looks like <a href="http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/mytightride/Civic014dBig.jpg" rel="nofollow">this one</a> then you are in luck. Turns out my wife has one, and I got <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007M64GK?ie=UTF8&tag=thlibl-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0007M64GK" rel="nofollow">this one</a> from a store for my car, and it did in fact fit on her civic with the spoiler Her's is a 2002 though I believe.
I don't have any pictures of if, but could of swore I did.
If you don't want to try the saris you can get a hitch and have it fitted, then get pretty much any 1 3/4 inch hitch bike rack will fit.

I have been looking EVERYWHERE online for a trunk mount to fit my '04 Honda Civic WITH a spoiler. I can't seem to find one that would fit. Do you know of any? I would really prefer not to get a roof mount as they seem more of a pain than I want to deal with. What are my options with this car?

Hey Oscar,

There is not really too much to it. I took all the stuff of I didn't need, shifter, rear brake, derailers. Cleaned it all up. Took the back wheel off, took the cassette off, screwed a race / track cog on with a lock ring, adjusted the chain, re spaced and re trued my wheel then it was "fixed".

For extra's I then replaced the pedals / bar tape, cut all the braze ons off with a hack saw, filed it down, painted it in primer, then several coats of black (after a lot of sanding). Cleaned / polished the chrome. After riding it for a while I cut the larger tooth crank up so that it only had the smaller one on it, and reattached it. This picture has is before that modification, I need to update it :) The wheelbase is rather short, so if you have big feet and turn a lot you may run into problems turning, but its still a blast to ride. It cost me $15 for the cog, and about $15 in paint. I had all the tools and other equipment though.

Let me know if you have any other questions and how your conversion goes. I'm thinking of selling or trading this one if any one is interested.

Hey Oscar,

There is not really too much to it. I took all the stuff of I didn’t need, shifter, rear brake, derailers. Cleaned it all up. Took the back wheel off, took the cassette off, screwed a race / track cog on with a lock ring, adjusted the chain, re spaced and re trued my wheel then it was “fixed”.

For extra’s I then replaced the pedals / bar tape, cut all the braze ons off with a hack saw, filed it down, painted it in primer, then several coats of black (after a lot of sanding). Cleaned / polished the chrome. After riding it for a while I cut the larger tooth crank up so that it only had the smaller one on it, and reattached it. This picture has is before that modification, I need to update it The wheelbase is rather short, so if you have big feet and turn a lot you may run into problems turning, but its still a blast to ride. It cost me $15 for the cog, and about $15 in paint. I had all the tools and other equipment though.
